Private label baby diapers reached a record 32% share of global unit sales in 2024, up from 26% in 2020, according to data compiled from major retail markets in Europe, North America and Asia. The shift reflects both improved quality from OEM manufacturers and sustained cost pressure on household budgets in a higher-inflation environment.
Quality Convergence
The performance gap between leading branded diapers and high-quality OEM alternatives has narrowed significantly over the past five years. Modern OEM manufacturers now offer:
- SAP + fluff pulp absorbent cores with rapid acquisition layers
- 3D leak-prevention channels reducing side and back leakage incidents
- Breathable backsheets with moisture-wicking non-woven topsheets
- Resealable elastic waistbands and soft leg cuffs for comfort fit
- Wetness indicators and colour-change features previously reserved for premium brands
Adult Diapers: The Fastest-Growing Segment
Adult diapers are now the fastest-growing subcategory within the broader diaper market, expanding at 8.3% CAGR globally. Ageing populations in Europe, Japan, South Korea and China are the primary growth driver. Pull-up style adult diapers (also called pants-style or adult pull-ups) are gaining share over traditional tape-closure pads, particularly in the ambulatory care and home care segments.
Pet Diapers: Emerging Niche
The pet diaper category, while small in absolute volume, is growing at over 12% annually as pet humanisation trends strengthen in urban markets. Female dog diapers, cat diapers and small animal products are increasingly stocked by veterinary clinics, pet chains and e-commerce platforms.
